About the Role
Lead a team of principal investigators and researchers to technical excellence developing new formulations of protective coatings on a variety of research and development projects including long-term federal research DoD contracts. Reports to Elinor’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO).
Responsibilities
Directly Supervise and Assign Tasks to Technical Teams
Act as a technical resource for management and staff.
Plan and direct research and development teams projects
Evaluate and present performance reviews of lab staff for promotion and salary review.
Participate actively in future laboratory hires.
Direct Research Activities
Maintain a safe and clean lab consistent with environmental regulations and best practices.
Maintain and continually develop lab standard operating procedures.
Maintain technical leadership in the coating field through continuous improvement
Manage Federal Research Projects
Be the principal technical point of contact between research sponsors and Elinor.
Be responsible for internal and external technical progress reporting.
Oversee lab budget and timekeeping according to federal contracting standards.
Additional Responsibilities
Participate in scientific meetings, publications, company-sponsored white papers when appropriate.
Assist CTO in technology scouting, proposal writing and long-term planning.

Requirements
Minimum Education/Experience
PhD + 10 - 20 years of experience. Preferred in coating science, materials science, chemistry, or closely related field.
Five+ years of group leader experience in a laboratory environment.
Industry experience in protective coatings research and development.
Familiarity working with federally funded research contracts.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Experience supervising research projects and interacting with several partners.
Experience with coating research, formulations, characterization, and testing.
Knowledge of corrosion protection, corrosion inhibition and electrochemical testing.
Skills in word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, design of experiment, data management and analysis software.
Ability to communicate clearly and competently orally and in writing to enable working with multi-disciplinary (technical and non-technical) groups of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
